I am an established teacher trainer, having trained 250 volunteer teachers in Mumbai and Delhi for the Teach India project and 200 volunteers in rural, semi-urban and urban Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra for Aga Khan Education Service, India over the last four years. I understand a range of factors affecting the process of second language learning, and having trained teachers from diverse backgrounds, am aware of the difficulties they can face in adopting new teaching methods. I applied my experience of educational change by leading a needs analysis process involving 250 stakeholders, and synthesized findings into a report for Aga Khan Education Service, India. This report informed my creation of a curriculum for over 600 learners, and workshops for 350 teachers. I found that respect and empathy were key in overcoming resistance, enabling me to then help teachers understand and apply new skills in their classrooms. To support them, I proactively developed observation instruments and an innovative mentoring system that combined field visits with Skype and mobile phones.This ongoing support for teachers consolidated face-to-face workshops, and allowed me to evaluate the impact of training. I was able to apply and extend my mentoring experience at Teach India to this context, making sure I encouraged teachers, and phrasing feedback constructively. I am gradually introducing teacher reflection into this system, so that they can think more about their own teaching without the presence of the mentor. Having designed training workshops for rural Gujarati teachers, and adapted Teach India materials for different audiences ranging from teachers with a vast experience in English teaching in the traditional method to enthusiastic college goers with no background in ELT, I am keenly aware of the importance of planning lessons, anticipating obstacles, respecting timeframes, and focussing on outcomes. From observing and delivering Teach India teacher training, I have realised that one of the most powerful ways of changing teachers’ practice is for them to experience learner-centred approaches themselves. This is something I strive to incorporate in all my teacher training, frequently using microteaching, debates, group/pair work, and activities. I ensure that trainees of all learning styles get maximum benefit from my sessions by varying tasks and inputs, and by encouraging their involvement. I have received excellent feedback in official observations by British Council Training Consultants regarding my use of a variety of tasks, time management, clear and checked instructions and managing a variety of interaction patterns. Having taught English to 500 low level learners from diverse backgrounds over the last four years, I have first hand experience of the potential of ELT methodology to impact learners. I strongly believe that contextualization is key to language learning. Hence I relate target skills to local context to help my learners understand better, if necessary, using learners’ L1. Similarly, when I train teachers, I ensure they understand the importance of language contextualization. I believe my experience of teacher training, English teaching and ELT project management demonstrate my potential to be a committed ELT trainer. Having worked with the British Council and Cambridge for the last two years has only added to my knowledge and experience
