Income Tax implications for a Freelancer in India

With more and more growth of internet in India, the number of freelancers or independent contractors is on a steep rise. People prefer to work for themselves on their own terms than an employer and are capable of earning far more than what they would in their day to day job. So the question comes “Do I need to pay taxes for my earnings as a freelancer”? The answer is YES and you need to pay taxes and file your income tax returns even if you are an individual consultant or a freelancer.

Within Indian Law any individual running a business where he/she is the sole owner is termed as a Sole Proprietor, the same applies with a Freelancer. A person earning on his own is considered a Sole Proprietor and needs to file income tax returns using the ITR-4 return form . If you have any other income source (maybe your full time job) you need to include that as well while filing your income tax return.

What is Freelancing ?

Freelancing can be explained in simple terms as a self employment job or the practice of working for your self. Freelancer  is someone that works as an independent contractor to provide a specific service to a client.

Freelancing is nowadays common in numerous fields of work including IT & Programming, Web Design, Graphic Design, Journalism, Sales & Marketing, Customer Service and Finance & Accounting.

Freelance practice varies greatly. Some Freelancers find work through direct referral while others choose to use a more subtle way of finding work online by searching for jobs on various online marketplaces like worknhire.com, elance.com, odesk.com etc .Some require clients to sign written contracts, while others may perform work based on verbal agreements, perhaps enforceable through the very nature of the work.

How do I find work?

Project Leads

Project leads are simply project opportunities. You can either seek out leads using Search for Projects or you can wait to be notified of leads through Project Invitations .

Searching for projects is the primary way Freelancers find work on Work-n-Hire. You can search for projects by project name, keyword, or skill category. Additionally, you can filter your results by budget, location, category and more.

To begin searching, click on Work and in the dropdown menu click on “Search Jobs

or on the top navigation bar, enter keywords  in the Search box and click Search Jobs .

Upon finding a solid lead, your next step is to Submit a proposal.

How to Submit Your Proposal

How Do I Submit a Proposal on a Job?

To submit proposals to jobs on Work-n-Hire, you must first login on Work-n-Hire with a Contractor account.

Once you have LoggedIn and created a profile, you can now search for jobs and submit proposals.

To submit a proposal for a job, follow the steps below:

1.  Click on the job name.

2.  You will see a Project brief section on the top left of the page that quickly covers basics about the job, like when it was posted, how much time is left, where the client is located, start date, budget and more.  This gives you a quick overview of the job.

3.  Below the Project brief section is the job description. Below job description you can find the skills required by the client to work on the project.  After evaluating the job and skills required you can submit a proposal.

4. Enter your detailed proposal description into the box on the right hand side, including any attachments. You can expand the form to make it easier to write, view and submit your proposal. In the Proposal Description area, you can enter up to 4000 characters.  In your proposal description, describe your relevant experience, qualifications, and what value you will bring to the job.

6.  Below Proposal Description is the Cost & Timing section.  In this section you will indicate your cost and the estimated delivery date.  The Work-N-Hire fees are deducted from the total bid amount, so lets say if you submit a proposal amount of Rs 100, a percentage of fees will be deducted while paying you out.

7. If you need clarification on the job details before completing your proposal, you may submit a bid without a price by selecting the Will Submit Amount Later.  You will be able to submit an amount later for the job

9. Click Preview & Post button to proceed.

10. Review your proposal, then click Submit Proposal.

Once you submit your proposal, you can view the job on you’re My Project page, by filtering on the status ‘Open’ link.  This link will shows all the jobs for which you have submitted proposals, where the bidding period is still open.

Why isn’t anyone hiring me?

To Get Hired

When you submit a proposal for a project you’re pitching your services to the Client. You’re telling him or her what you can do, how long it will take, and how much it will cost. This makes client to choose the contractor of his choice.

There are some points due to which you are not getting hired.

  1. You have not completed your Profile. Add Portfolios, Employment, Education and skills to your profile to get highlighted.
  2. Your proposal description may not be good. See our FAQ section to know how to write a good proposal.
  3. Your bid amount may be very high.
  4. You may not have any feedbacks from your previous clients. Ask your clients to send you feedbacks.

When will I get more bids to spend?

More Bids

A contractor as he creates an account on Work-n-Hire he is assigned 20 initial monthly bids which he can use for a month. If he wants more bids in between a month period he can get it by inviting his friends to join Work-n-Hire.
The additional 5 invitation bonus bids will be awarded to the contractor as soon as his friend creates an account on Work-n-Hire.

What do I do when an Employer selects me for a project?

After Job Award

When a Client selects you for his project a notification will be sent to you in which it is mentioned that you have been awarded the job. You can open the page to accept or reject the job award by either simply clicking on the notification or by Selecting the job from “My Project” page.

To accept project award click on “Accept Project Award” button or you can alternatively reject the project award by clicking on “Reject” button.

A notification to the client will be sent in each case.

How do I post a project?

Tips For Posting a Job

A well-written and thoughtfully crafted job description is a great way to attract the best candidates who have right skills and expertise for your job. Here are some specific tips:

Write a good job description

Describing your job in a clear and concise manner is a great way to increase the number and quality of proposals you receive.  It helps contractors craft targeted proposals with accurate pricing. Some things to include may be your goals for the job, detailed scope requirements, and time frame expectations.  Using examples as references is a great way to make your ideas more concrete.

Determine your approximate budget

When posting a job on Work N Hire, the budget you set in the beginning does not lock you into a price range.  Contractors can propose higher or lower amounts based on what they estimate the job will cost to complete and how much they want to win your business. Communicating an estimated range helps contractors target their proposals to your needs. If your budget range is unrealistic for the amount of work to be done, service contractors may not think it is a serious job, and the likely result will be fewer and lower-quality proposals.

Choose the category that best matches the job type and skills you need

Choosing the right category (IT & Programming, Graphic Design etc) is important as it defines the group of professionals that will be able to submit proposals for your job. Choosing a relevant subcategory helps contractors search for your job, but does not limit which contractors can submit a proposal within that category.

Select the appropriate skills

When posting your job, you have the option to select the top 5 skills you are looking for in the contractor you hire.  The skills selected will be used to tag your job so contractors easily find it by searching job postings.

Specify the approximate duration

By Specifying your approximate duration of the project you can tell contractor the time in which you expect that the work will get completed. This will enhance the possibility for you to hire a right contractor for your job.

Expect multiple responses within days

You should start to get multiple proposals from qualified contractors within the first few days.  Every situation is different, but the quality of the proposals is more important than the number of proposals received. If you don’t feel like you are getting the right quality proposals for your job, we highly encourage you to give us a call or send an email to give us the opportunity to help you out.

How do I write a good job post?

Write a Good job Post

To post your first job, you must first create an account on Work-n-Hire. Once you’ve verified your email address, you can post your job by following the steps below.  If signed out, click the Login button on the homepage, or click on the Hire –> Post Job link if signed in.

On the job post form fill out the following information:

  1. The name of the job
  2.
