What is Freelancing ?

Back To All Blog

Freelancing can be explained in simple terms as a self employment job or the practice of working for your self. Freelancer  is someone that works as an independent contractor to provide a specific service to a client.

Freelancing is nowadays common in numerous fields of work including IT & Programming, Web Design, Graphic Design, Journalism, Sales & Marketing, Customer Service and Finance & Accounting.

Freelance practice varies greatly. Some Freelancers find work through direct referral while others choose to use a more subtle way of finding work online by searching for jobs on various online marketplaces like worknhire.com, elance.com, odesk.com etc .Some require clients to sign written contracts, while others may perform work based on verbal agreements, perhaps enforceable through the very nature of the work.

Payment Arrangement

Receiving payments from Clients is a widely raised concern by Freelancers across the world. Payment systems for freelance work also varies greatly. By custom, payment arrangements may be upfront, percentage upfront, or upon completion. For more complex projects, a contract may set a payment schedule based on milestones or outcomes. Online Marketplaces use the concept of Escrow Funds in which the client makes the payment of the project/milestones to the middle party (service provider) and it is not released to the freelancer till the time work is satisfactorily completed and approved by the client.

Freelancers may charge by the day, hour, a piece rate, or on a per-project basis. Instead of a flat rate or fee, some freelancers have adopted a value-based pricing method based on the perceived value of the results to the client.

A freelancer can work on-site or off-site, and it is pretty common for freelancers to work from home. Further, there are services that can be provided online. The advent of internet has spawned a new era in the information age that we are living in.  It is now very easy for freelancers to take up work, communicate with the clients online and deliver the work once done without having to appear face to face with the clients.

Can I make money as a freelancer?

Well if you have had any skill whatsoever, like writing, web designing, creative art, logo designing, graphic designing, translation, animation and whole lot of categories which could all be transferred to your potential client online doing away with your physical presence, it could all be put to good use and you could actually make a business out of something that you used to just dabble with.

Freelancing is big business today and it has seen tremendous growth in the recent years under a bigger umbrella – Home Business. More and more people have chosen this path as a response to their increasing distaste on their corporate lives, abusive bosses and scum-infested, irrational, politically skewed policies.

Before you decide to start working as a freelancer you need to look at the following fact. Most people want the security of a full time job with work handed to them by someone. They need the structure of a workplace. But if you can make the transition and learn how to generate paying work and create your own structure, freelancing offers more security, more money, and far more freedom than full time employment.

Since, there is no place for complacency while you work, it so happens that you work harder and hence earn a lot more money than what your fixed monthly salary used to pay you.Freelancing is truly a heaven-send for some people who had wanted to do something on their own but couldn’t for some reason or the other.

By being a freelancer or a self-employed professional, you are still on your way to make it big, all for yourself. If you are considering freelancing online and if you think you can do any of the following:
